The kids are out of school, the sun is out, and the fish are biting! We are entering the height of our summer boating season. Make sure that you know the law to say safe and compliant.

Boat requirements for Coast Guard Approval

Boats Less than 26'

One B-I size extinguisher

(Fire extinguishers are not required on outboard-powered pleasure boats less than 26' in length, not carrying passengers for hire, without permanently-installed fuel tanks, that do not have spaces where explosive or flammable gasses or vapors can collect.)

Boats 26' to less than 40'

Two B-I type OR one B-II type approved portable fire ext.

B-I Types: dry chem min 2lbs to less than 10lbs. Must include USCG approved bracket.

Boats 40' to no more than 65'

Three B-I type OR one B-I type PLUS one B-II type approved portable fire extinguishers

B-II Types
dry chem 10lb and above

When a fixed fire extinguishing system is installed in machinery spaces it will
replace one B-I portable fire extinguisher.
